What inspired the name of your business?
Unsurprisingly, I’ve been sung the song “Oh Susanna” my entire life. A couple of years ago I started an Instagram account to post pictures of my various baking projects and I called it “Oh Susanna Bakes”. When crafting became my focus it felt natural to then call my business “Oh Susanna Makes”!

What is the story behind why you started your business?
I’ve been crafting for as long as I can remember. I love making things. I love working with my hands. I love the idea of my creations being out there in the world and the thought of people deriving joy from them is so meaningful to me. Friends and family would often tell me I should sell my pieces, so with their enthusiasm and support I decided to start my own business in the fall of 2017.

What is the dream that you wish to fund through your business?
It’s been a privilege to connect with other makers, shop owners, and market organizers, and feel welcomed into the local crafting community. It would be a dream to create a space where I could share my love of making and empower others to explore their own creativity in a safe and inclusive environment.

What are you most proud of about your business?
The most proud I feel is when I’m at a market standing behind my creations both literally and figuratively.

How have you grown as a person as a result of your business?
Putting myself out there creatively has been a scary and vulnerable experience. Facing this fear head on has been a challenging but rewarding journey so far and has helped me connect with my authentic self.

What difference does your art make in your life, and your family’s life?
I wouldn’t be able to do this without the love and support of my family. This experience has brought me a lot closer to them.

If you could say one thing to the person that buys and/or enjoys your art, what would it be?
Thank you for shopping local and supporting small business!

Why do you love being a part of Giving Gifts?
The ethos of Giving Gifts resonates with me deeply, especially how it brings makers together in a bright and inviting space. I am inspired by Lisa’s passion and drive and feel so grateful to be a member of this vibrant community!

Why we love having Oh Susanna Makes at Giving Gifts:
Susanna's textile potted plants bring a smile to anyone who spots them in the store! They are all totally unique, colourful and she's always bringing us fun new designs. They bring a feeling of greenery to the store (without having to water them.) They are definitely a favourite gift here at Giving Gifts! Since they are all one of a kind, you'll have to pop by the store to choose your favourite. If you live out of town, drop us a line and we'll be happy to help you pick one of these cuties out.
