Who are you and what do you do?
Hi, I am Rachel and I design whimsical jewelry for kids age 3+. All Rachel Rainbow pieces are created for pretending.
Why do you do what you do?
I have been designing jewelry and creating small businesses ever since I was a kid. I design from a nostalgic place and each piece in the collection I would have never even dreamed of as a kid. I strive to create jewelry that brings joy and will be treasured by it's wearer. Nothing makes me happier than seeing the look of wonderment in a little girls eyes when she sees my table at a market. That look is all the validation I need.
When did you start and how has your business changed over time?
I started creating Rachel Rainbow in 2013 as a creative outlet. What I had started then looks VERY different now. I have refined my designs and branding to reflect my target market. 2016 was a big year for Rachel Rainbow as I quit my FT design job to focus more of my energy on the brand. I am always re-evaluating and never afraid to grow and try new things. I am excited to build on 2016 this year, I have some exciting things planned.
How do you like to work?
I work in the living room of my 1 bedroom apartment in Vancouver. It is not much to look at, but it works. I am usually binge watching something on Netflix and though I do have a desk, I tend to spread out onto most surfaces in my home including my bed at times.
What inspires you in your art?
I am inspired by materials and colours. I am always trying to create something a bit unusual and special but familiar. My unicorn pieces are my best sellers, because most kids know what a unicorn is and can connect with it. It's important for me to stay true to the Rachel Rainbow brand. It's whimsical and "created for pretending" but it's not princesses and glass slippers.
What is one thing you love?
I love swimming. Not in pools but in the ocean or a lake. One of my goals this year is to make more time for this.
What is your favorite piece you create and why?
I love creating the bracelets. Sourcing the beads and the charms is one of my favorite parts. Putting together different patterns and beads to create something special is a meditative process for me. Sometimes the design comes together naturally, other bracelets will be designed 3-10 times before it is final. The Panda Bear bracelet was finalized and then redesigned twice before I launched it. Third time is sometimes a charm.
What is one thing you need in order to be successful at what you do?
Passion. I am a one woman show and there are a lot of different hats I wear on a daily basis. I think if I was not totally in love with with Rachel Rainbow I would have quit on several occasions.
What do you like being part of Giving Gifts & Company?
Giving Gifts was the first shop to carry Rachel Rainbow. I was so nervous about contacting stores back in 2015 and Lisa was kind enough to meet with me and carry my pieces in her store. I love being in a shop with so many local vendors. I also work in the store part time and love promoting and selling my peers work!
Do you have words of advice for other artists entrepreneurs?
Know what your worth and be confident with that number. If you want to create a sustainable business, you need an income. Make sure that income has the potential for you to earn a living. Your not just making something your also branding it, packaging it, promoting your products on social media, answering emails, creating invoices and the list goes on. This all adds up!
I love Rachel's line of jewelry for kids! It is beautifully designed and every detail is completely thought out. You can tell that Rachel truly cares about creating gorgeous items for kids to enjoy. My daughters both have many items by Rachel Rainbow and I have given lots as gifts. The girls love them, especially the bracelets, and I often find them stacking them on their wrists and wearing them to sleep. I highly recommend Rachel Rainbow jewelry as birthday presents and every day fun gifts. I love them and you'll love them too! They are guaranteed to make you, and the little people in your life, smile.
