Gwen & Scotty's Story - Studio Wilder

How did you decide on the name for your business?
We came up with the name because it's my sons middle name. We wanted it to be something personal that related to our family. My husband's dad had just passed away and he and Westin (Wilder) were really close and loved working together in his wood shop. Even though Westin was only 3! It felt somehow like a way of linking Bill, my husband's dad, into our business. He never got to see our cards, but I think Scotty and I both think of him with every wood slice we cut and attach to our cards.

Also, we just really love the name Wilder! We came up with it originally (as our son's name) because we both love the outdoors, the wilderness, the wild. Also, I grew up on the "wild side" of a small gulf Island. Scotty always loved how my mom called it that. "Let's go for a walk on the wild side" she would say, and he would always smile and start thinking of a story.

What is the story behind why you started your business?
I am a stay at home mom, and needed something to do that was creative and fun. My husband works on a computer a lot, he owns juicystudios.com and he needed something that would get him working with his hands more. One day we just started talking about greeting cards, and how it would be awesome to have a card that was so nice to look at that you would want to keep it. We started with a simple wood triangle tree on a white card. It's still my favourite. I think we both like the scale and challenge of a card too. It's amazing how m much you can you say in a 5x7 inch space!

What is the dream that you wish to fund through your business?
I think our dream is world domination with greeting cards! To make people smile, and to get to share in all those happy, or sad times, is pretty special. To know that someone picked our card out of all the others makes me so happy! And we both are having so much fun creating the cards. The best par tis that the kids are helping us too!

It would be amazing if this could become our full time "real" job!

What are you most proud of about your business?
I think i'm most proud of the fact that I took a chance and even started the business at all! I had a good job that I could have gone back to once my kids were old enough, but I decided to take the risk and try my own thing. It's hard to put myself out there, and be vulnerable. People don't always understand why you would give up the safe choice to do a "hobby" or  "art". I like my kids to see that mom is doing something cool, and it will actually hopefully be a success! I love that choosing what you like to do is a possibility in the world of employment.
How have your grown as a person as a result of your business?
I think I've become so much better at time management! Not always, but sometimes. Sometimes I'm amazed at what I can get done in one day!

What difference does your art make in your life? And your familiy’s life?
I think it makes a big difference. It's a way that we all connect as a family now. My 5 year old is always coming up with great card ideas, and Lola our 2 year old always has some wood slice in her pocket, or is looking for rocks for us to put on cards. Often the rocks she picks weigh about 10lbs, but you know, she's got the right idea!

Also, I think it's a way that both Scotty and I feel we are holding his dads memory close. Bill was a serious master in the wood shop.

If you could say one thing to the person that buys and/or enjoys your art, what would it be?
Thank you! We feel so grateful every day that people like our cards!
