Where did the name of your business come from?
I never really thought of it was a business when I first started painting, illustrating and writing, so it's just my name: Jodi Sam. However, I do sign with my works with the initials "js" and that has become my logo and in some sense, my business name.

What's the story behind why you started your business?
I have always loved art, ever since I was a child. I first started painting at around 10 years-old. At that time, it was lots of ink watercolour paintings at art class in a community center here in Vancouver. After university (with a degree that was totally not art related), I moved on to wearable art, fashion styling. It was not until around 2009 that I took up illustrating and writing. I relocated to Tokyo the following year, to work and develop my creative projects—holding exhibitions and releasing my first illustrated book. Since relocating back to Vancouver in late 2016, I decided to continue with my artistic endeavours because they bring me so much joy, and I loving sharing that joy with others. It truly is a passion that naturally evolved into a business.

What are you most proud of about your business?
Connecting with people in visual way and being able to spread happiness around. I want to paint subjects or themes that makes people feel good and happy. So, when I hear from people that my pieces cheer them up or make them smile, I cannot be more grateful or proud!

How have you grown as a person as a result of your business? It hasn't been the easiest resettling back into Vancouver after 6 1/2 years away. Reaching out to the local communities, people, and wonderful stores, such as Giving Gifts, that are supportive of creative talents, and then receiving positive feedback from them, have made this transition much easier. I feel more grounded and more a part of Vancouver now than before I left home.

What difference does your art make in your life?
Art makes me feel complete, so I don't know what to do without it! There is always something I am daydreaming of painting or writing about. My life would be extremely boring if art wasn't a part of it.

If you could say something to the person who buy/enjoys your art, what would it be?
"Thank you thank you thank you. I am so grateful to be doing what I am doing, and that's all because of you! I hope my art brings you lots of smiles and joy—Cheers!!"
