Artist Story: Jori of Linden Paper Co.

Where did the name of your business come from?
The name Linden Paper Co. comes from my maiden name, van der Linde, which describes in Dutch a family that lives near a Linden tree—a leafy tree sacred in many parts of Europe. For me, the connection between nature, family and history is at the heart of this company.

What is the story behind why you started your business?
I come from a background in freelance illustration specializing in pattern design, book covers, children’s books and editorial work.  While I still greatly enjoy all the projects I work on, I also found such creative freedom in developing and producing my own products.  When I started selling my art prints and greeting cards at craft fairs and markets around Vancouver, I found immediate success and knew that this was something I needed to pursue. The joy I felt in sharing my illustrations through thoughtfully designed paper products inspired me to launch Linden Paper Co.

What is the dream that you wish to fund through your business?
The ethos of the company is to live a life of balance between work, home and travel, and to enjoy and treasure every experience.  So if I can find that sweet spot for adventure, family, and celebrating life, I'll be very happy.

How have you grown as a person as a result of your business?
I'm only in my first month of business with Linden Paper Co, but behind that is a year of personal growth and learning. Building a business requires to learn many things you might not be good at.  For me, the creative process comes quite naturally, but putting on the hats of marketing and accounting, to name a few, are a lot more challenging.

What are you most proud of about your business?
I am so proud that I've finally been able to launch Linden Paper Co. and show people what I've been working on!  It's really been a labour of love for me (I almost feel like Linden Paper Co. is my child) and there is so much room for growth, I can't wait to see what this company can become!

What difference does your art make in your life, and your family’s life?
For me, illustration has always been one of my great loves. Being at a place now to professionally share that passion, and inspire others to be creative is such a blessing. My husband Chris is an accountant, and my opposite, so me being passionate about art has definitely made a difference in his life. He has completely supported me in this dream, and often stays up late to package cards, work on my taxes, and really anything I need help with. He's the best.

If you could say one thing to the person that buys and/or enjoys your art, what would it be?
I'd love to tell people who buy our products to be creatively inspired, to celebrate life daily, and to give them big 'ol thanks for supporting a local Canadian artist!

Why we love having Linden Paper Co. at Giving Gifts
Jori's artistic style is so pretty! Her cards and stationery are bold and elegant all at once. You'll be sure to brighten someone's day with her designs. Her connection to nature is evident and we love what all her pieces add to the store. They look perfect next to our plant displays!
